You can achieve an easier less painful labour without drugs using TENS.  TENS stimulates nerves via self-adhesive pads, releasing endorphins and disrupting the pain signal to the brain, effectively reducing the sensation from your contractions.

TENS can be used in conjunction with other pain relief techniques during labour – it has been used effectively with acupressure, movement and heat packs, and you can use it with the gas and pethedine as well.  TENS is a great item to include in your “toolbox” for labour.

WHAT is TENS?

 Non-invasive pain relief for

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.  TENS produces electrical signals to stimulate nerves via self-adhesive pads. This releases endorphins, and disrupts the pain signal to the brain, effectively reducing the pain sensation.

How will TENS Help Your Pain?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) works by passing mild  electrical impulses through the skin, via electrode pads, into the nerve fibres which lie below.  The TENS impulses help your body produce its own pain killing chemicals, such as ‘endorphins’.

The level of pain relief obtained varies from person to person.  Some find that using TENS during childbirth provides all the pain relief required during the whole of labour, whereas others find that other analgesics are also required.  A Swedish study showed that TENS was the only pain killer required by 70% of women in labour.
